 | Chinese Lion Dancers and WuShu Fighters |
The Chinese Lion is a mythological creature that represents strength, wisdom, good luck, and has the ability to drive away evil spirits.
The Chinese consider the lion dance to be a vehicle for dispensing all the good blessings of heaven to the whole community. It is done not only during the New Year's celebration but also on auspicious occaisions, and represents the hopes and aspirations of the Chinese people for all the good things life holds.
The lion dance is an extension of the Chinese martial arts. All the movements of the Lion are based on stances and positions from the Kung Fu taught at AMAS. Lion dancing develops strength, flexibility and endurance as well as the ability to work in team and overcome obstacles through group effort. Not only do the performers display strength, coordination, agility and endurance, they also exemplify the martial spirit in the "Ssu-wei", or the four basic supports of a State: "li," or decorum; :"i,, uprightness of mind (morality); "lien," honesty; and "chih," a sense of honor.

 | Gulf Coast Chinese America Association |
The Gulfcoast Chinese American Association (GCAA) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving and promoting friendship with and on behalf of the Chinese community of the greater Sarasota, Bradenton and Venice areas of Florida. Our membership also includes members of the Families with Children from China (FCC) and the US China Peoples Friendship Association (USCPFA).
We strive to build friendship, camaraderie and support for and amongst members by providing social, cultural and educational services that are also open to the community at large.
GCAA relies solely on volunteers for their time, effort, dedication and expertise. Officers, board members, committee chairpersons and committee members are all unpaid volunteers. We depend on membership dues, supplemented by fundraisers and donations to make our services and activities possible.
We want this to be your organization where we can all come together to share some fun and at the same time to promote Chinese heritage and culture. We value your input, appreciate your friendship and thank you for your support!
